Getting around

Salzburg has no U-Bahn or tram. The city is walkable end-to-end in 30 min. Public transport is by Obus (trolleybus) and bus, run by Salzburg AG.

Tickets

  • Single €2.40 (60 min, all transfers)
  • 24 h €5.40
  • Monthly €58 / Annual €595
  • Semester ticket €185 (under 26) — covers Salzburg city + all S-Bahn lines for one full semester
  • Klimaticket Salzburg €595/year — entire province

Buy in the Salzburg Verkehr app or at Obus stops.

S-Bahn (suburban rail)

6 lines reach the wider region — Hallein, Lamprechtshausen, Bad Reichenhall (DE), Berchtesgaden (DE), Saalfelden. Same Salzburg AG ticket valid for all.

ÖBB

  • Salzburg ↔ Vienna 2:22, ↔ Munich 1:30, ↔ Innsbruck 1:50
  • Vorteilscard < 26 (€19/year) cuts ÖBB fares by 50 %

Bikes

Citybike Salzburg — first 60 min free with €1/year registration. Most students have their own bike — distances are short and flat (Salzach valley).

In winter, salt and grit make the cycle paths messy — keep mudguards and a chain oiler.

Frequently asked

3
  • Do I need a car?

No. The city is walkable, the bike paths are excellent, and Klimaticket gets you everywhere in the province by train.

  • Is the S-Studierendenticket really €185?

Yes — for the *Stadt Salzburg* zone + S-Bahn region. Outside that you need Klimaticket Salzburg (€595/year) or pay per ride.

  • How do I get to Munich?

Hourly Meridian or ÖBB train, 1:30, ≈ €30 standard. Cheapest with Vorteilscard or via FlixBus (€10–€15 advance).
