Visa & residence

Austria's visa rules are nationwide — same as Vienna. The Salzburg branch is much smaller and processes files faster on average.

EU/EEA/Swiss

  • Anmeldebescheinigung (€15) within 4 months
  • Family members get a 5-year residence card

Third-country students

  • Visa D at the Austrian embassy in your home country before flying in
  • Convert to Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierender within 4 months at Schwarzstraße 44, 5020 Salzburg
  • Documents: admission, accommodation, ≈ €700–€1 200/month for 12 months proven, ÖGK insurance, photos, birth certificate + apostille
  • First issue ≈ €160, yearly extension ≈ €80
  • Processing: 6–10 weeks
  • Online appointment via salzburg.gv.at
Salzburg's office is much smaller than Vienna's — appointments fill up roughly two weeks in advance. Book the day you commit to studying here.

Frequently asked

3
  • Can I apply at MA 35 in Vienna instead?

No — your residence permit is tied to your registered address. If your dorm is in Salzburg, you go to Schwarzstraße. MA 35 only handles Vienna.

  • Is it easier or harder than in Vienna?

Faster usually — Salzburg processes 50× fewer files than Vienna. 6–8 weeks is common, vs. Vienna's 8–10.

  • Can family members join?

Yes — the *Familiengemeinschaft* clause covers spouses and minor children. They need their own residence cards but the main applicant's funds proof can cover them.
